I teach 2nd grade and absolutely love my school and the population we serve. My school is located in an area that is mid-high poverty and has an increasing number of students who are ELL. I just finished with my beginning of the year reading, writing and math assessments. The results were staggering! Two-thirds of my class did not pass the math assessment and are at a beginning/middle of first grade level in their math skills. When it comes to reading, the whole class is below grade level. Their reading level ranges between end of Kindergarten and the end of first grade. Writing scores mirror the reading scores. I am very sad that my students do not have the skills necessary to begin 2nd grade work. These test results are motivating me even more to provide the best and most effective instruction and practice opportunities possible so that each student will grow academically this year.
