My students are served under the umbrella of special education in the categories of specific learning disabilities (dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc.), other health impairment (ADHD, OCD, etc.), emotional disturbance, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. The majority of my students have limited experience outside a 30-mile radius of our community. Having high-interest, high-quality magazines are a great way to not only spark an interest in reading, but also help build background knowledge for my students. We use these magazines to give students exposure to science and social studies concepts while building their content vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. They are attracted to the content because of the high-quality photos. They can read the pieces because they are shorter than textbook chapters and they are written in an interesting style. We address reading standards using the non-fiction text as well as science and social studies standards. We teach note-taking, summarizing, research, and print concepts with each magazine. I can only choose two subject areas, but these subscriptions will help me address Literacy, Science, Social Studies, and Special Needs.
