Teaching mathematics to sixth graders is a challenge. Getting them engaged in their learning is an even bigger one. For many students, the moment they step into a math classroom they become uncomfortable due to the anxiety level of what they have to learn.
Being a father of an autistic child, I know many students suffer from sensory issues and could benefit from flexible seating in the classroom. Flexible seating can help overcome anxiety and sensory issues by giving the students a sense of comfort in the classroom. Students will get choice in the type of seat they want to use. This helps them feel empowered. Flexible seating also allows for ease of communication in the classroom due to the endless possibilities in the layout of how you can arrange seating. Some students work well in a standard classroom chair, but others come alive in an exercise ball chair or a wobbly stool.
I chose a plethora of seating styles for this project to give a wide range of choice in my classroom. I chose the balance ball for the students who need to move while sitting, and the reading nooks for the students who likes to get into a more comfortable position while learning. I also chose the comfy floor seats for the student who likes to be on the ground. By donating to help get these items, you will be helping many students get a chance to succeed in a subject they might not have thought they ever had a chance to do well in. Please give a child a chance to bring refrigerator worthy test grades home by helping my classroom be filled with choice.
