My students will use the Kindle Fires to listen to various reading materials while in Literacy centers. They will pick books based on their interests from pre-downloaded apps.
By being able to listen to books, they are increasing their knowledge of English while building their reading skills. Center time is their favorite time of the day! Having tablets would allow me to create a listening/literacy center which would spark their excitement even more! It would also allow my English Language Learners a chance to hear books in their home language. A listening center is crucial for my students because many are learning English as a second language. They will be able to read aloud while recognizing words that they already know.
This is especially helpful for first grade students who are building their knowledge from Kindergarten and can not always read books that they are interested in alone. It is also important that they are being given a chance to see that reading can be done for fun.
