The Sequoyah nominees should be a part of every library in Oklahoma. Unfortunately with such cuts in the budget many libraries are unable to purchase copies. Both Dreamland Burning, and Undefeated: Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team provide a gateway for looking into our own history. Books allow us to reflect on the events happening in the world we live in. Reading quality literature can encourage and promote rich discussion, reflecting on choices, and allowing students to relate to their daily lives. Relating to the characters in a novel often empowers students to see how a simple choice can change your fate. Students are encouraged to read, discuss, promote, and cast their vote for the winner each year. This simple act allows the opportunity to provide a supported place for students to make decisions and voice their opinions- knowing their opinions matter. Having a voice is a powerful thing.
