Using interactive notebooks in science class encourages organization and ownership of learning for students. My students currently do not have textbooks to take home. So, I give them handouts and materials to create their own personal notebooks. Most of my students are not able to purchase the supplies needed for their notebooks due to their low socioeconomic status. I am requesting class supplies and individual supplies so my students can have useful notebooks. Most of my students do not have their own coloring pencils, glue, or scissors at their homes so they do not look at their notebooks outside of class. Having individual supplies would allow them to work on their notebooks outside of class. Most of the teachers I know furnish most of the supplies in their classrooms from notebooks to pencils. It is a daily struggle of having enough supplies. My students need supplies to take with them to complete assignments and to work on their notebooks at home. Students that have personal supplies are more likely to take ownership of their notebook and their learning in class.
