The students in my pre-k classroom are busy: working on a science investigation, using the manipulative materials, pretending in dramatic play, building with blocks, listening to books on tape or CD, writing, drawing, or painting at the easel. The students are actively engaged in exploration and problem-solving activities. My class is one of five prekindergarten classes in our school, with a total of about eighty-five students. We have one three-year-old class serving children with diagnosed developmental delays and limited enrollment for children with speech and language delays. The five four-year-old classes serve children who meet NC Prekindergarten guidelines (primarily economic) or Exceptional Children's Program qualifications (developmental delay or disability.)
