The Let Them Eat Bread project will give children a way to interpret fractions, mixed numbers, temperature, science, and different cultural heritages in bread form. Like many communities, students are from low income families that do not have opportunities for cultural exploration outside of our valley. Baking bread creates a unique discussion about different regional areas based on climate, beliefs, and cultures. During the program, measurement utensils will be removed and students will need to accomplish their measurements using the remaining utensils (i.e. 1 cup equals four ¼ cups). Students will be combined in groups of 4 to measure and bake 2 loaves of bread per day. Students will design a method of cutting the bread so that each person in class will be allowed to taste the warm bread. Students will reap their rewards in the form of freshly baked bread. The biggest disadvantage will be the smell of fresh bread floating down the hallways distracting classes on their way to P.E and the library. I can hear the stomachs rumbling now.
