As a school librarian it is exciting and inspiring when students request books and share book reviews with their peers. These students encourage our school community to read book series and engage their classroom teachers in reading out-loud during snack time. In collaboration with a current UCO undergraduate student, I will facilitate the grade level book clubs once a week during recess and virtual if necessary. Our school's staff and administration is enthusiastic in developing a culture of reading! Every year our first grade teachers introduce their students to the Junie B. Jones book series. As these students develop their reading skills, it is hard to keep any title on the library shelf. The 2nd grade book club will be reading Junie B. Jones's Essential Survival Guide to School to support their transition to 3rd grade. Our third grade students are very interested in the I Survived series, the titles requested will provide a cross reference to social studies and science topics to research. One goal of a school librarian is introducing students to a variety of books, the upper grade students love graphic novels, especially Dog Man. At the beginning of the school year, I put away the Dog Man series but I introduced them to new graphic novels, such as the Wings of Fire series. Now, students constantly place holds on any Wings of Fire more than Dog Man. In efforts to increase the interest in the Oklahoma Sequoyah books, during our 4th grade library visits I read a chapter of Life Boat, the 2020 Oklahoma Sequoyah Award. The fourth graders are interested in reading Zeus, Dog of Chaos. This is a story that would make a great transition to middle school and introduce students to health and community service topics. Thank you in advance for your support!
