Scene 1: Students wander to rug, sit cross cross applesauce with eyes on teacher. Teacher leads the ABC Song. Then teacher perches on her chair holding a stack of abc flash cards. Teacher shows card and students say letter and it’s sound. Scene 2: Kinders scramble to find their animal spot on rug chatting with anticipation to see what letter will be taught today. Teacher introduces mini lesson for the letter of the day. She places the letter card under the doc camera and suddenly a porcupine has jumped out of the screen. The rug comes alive with learning! I plan to implement the 3d reality abc cards, animal rug, animal facts and stories along with journals for printing and writing to teach my kindergarteners the basic skills for reading. Research shows that an engaged excited child is going to process, retain and use the information more successfully. This fosters the beginning stages of reading. A skill that is used everyday. Teaching with this new technology based material allows me to use many teaching strategies that meet the CORE Curriculum Kindergarten Standards. My kinders come to school as 5-6 year olds however the range of maturity and abilities often are wide. The level of engagement will be appropriate for each child where they are in development and background experiences. There is also a component which the kinders take home either the ( dreaming of 20 still) journal or a follow up activity to share with their families. This builds home school relationships and communication as well as family opportunities to share the excitement of a little child rushing home to share the highlights of their active day of learning at school when the porcupine sat down beside him.
