My 6th grade students are mostly of Mexican descent, many of whom are English Learners and are from lower socio-economic backgrounds. With the transition to Common Core Standards, we are in need of books that these students can connect with who share their culture and themes they may face in their lives. The books Seedfolks, Number the Stars, and Esperanza Rising are stories that my studens have and will continue to connect with because of the multicultural characters and themes. There are many literacy projects that we can participate in using these novels that will help engage these students in reading not only for the year they are with me, but also in the future. We will use them to not only build classroom community, but to inspire them to contribute to the communities they come from.
