Equity Work is nothing new in public education, however it often gets moved to the side due to simplicity biases that many educators are not aware they have. Many students go to school hoping to learn something new everyday but do they actually see themselves in he learning? How can they take ownership for their learning when book characters and topics don't pertain to their lives? Curriculum is a great place to start when creating equitable learning opportunities. Students need a chance to share their stories and experiences and what better way to do that than to model through literature. This gives them a chance to see that although we are all different, we are all perfectly made and our stories matter. Equity is not the same as equality. This is just a small step to ensure that my students get the opportunity to not only learn about the world around them but how they fit in the world. Thank you in advance!
