Our school is a small charter school with a focus on fine arts, public speaking, community service and hands-on learning. The best way to have hands-on learning in music is to have access to authentic materials. Our band is a young program that started as a before school activity and as of last year is now an elective offered during the school day. The band program has grown so very much this year! In the past year the band program has doubled in size and even outgrown our classroom. I teach the largest band class in the cafeteria/performance space so that all students who want to can participate in band. As our program grows we must also increase our supply of instruments so that all students have an instrument to play.
