Battery-powered smoke detectors indicate their low battery by emitting a high pitched, loud (85 decibel) chirp. I often hear these chirps during my live Zooms and worry for the kids that their detectors may not work in case of a fire. I also worry for the students who might have already removed the old battery to eliminate the chirp. I'd like to combat this distraction and safety concern by providing at least one 9V battery to each of my students to ensure a smoke detector is functional. I'd also like to have a supply of actual detectors on hand for families in need. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that all worker exposures to noise should be controlled below a level equivalent to 85 dBA for eight hours to minimize occupational noise-induced hearing loss... this chirp is not only a distraction but could cause hearing loss.
