Some things in life are expected and are often taken for granted. It is not until we don't have them that we appreciate what we normally overlook. The first thing you would see when walking into a classroom are student desks. How very unusual to have them missing. Such is the case when our school was hit and flooded by Hurricane Harvey. Sure, students in my classroom are often found working independently on a carpet or in a small group in the corner. But student desks are like their "home base", a place where they feel at home in the classroom. The student desk is a representation of learning and growth and is the specific location where children create, debate, discuss, question, and make connections. Having student desks will lay the physical foundation for learning, provide children with a sense of ownership of the classroom, and create an environment of normalcy after experiencing the devastation of losing our school.
