At this moment in our nation, it is clear that a wave of change is needed to dismantle oppressive systems. My students are the first to experience this oppressed lifestyle with their own life experience and cultural background. As a history teacher, it is not only my job to educate on the past and present events in our nation but show and tell them about resilience, and hopefulness necessary to be the future leaders of this work. I believe that various projects online from TPT and their own personal Jason Reynolds Stamped from the beginning where we can read it together and reflect on various projects or ideas from TPT. What they NEED are opportunities to learn about these oppressive systems. The traditional sanitized Texas curriculum leaves out the historical and contemporary issues of race in our society and upholds outdated structures that marginalize young people of color. As a school community, I am committed to the work of anti-racism, resiliency, and overcoming obstacles, but we need resources to do this. The pandemic has left our school with less flexible funding than ever, but this important work can’t wait.
