When students have access to sensory experiences and exploration in school, they have the opportunity to improve their visual, auditory, tactile, and fine/gross motor skills as well as help to regulate their behaviors and improve focus. The school I work at has an empty classroom available to create into a sensory room, we just need some equipment. I want to create areas in the sensory room that focus on different sensory input needs. There will be an area for visual sensory input, such as lava lamps, bubble tubes, fiber optic lights, and star projectors. Another area will be our auditory area which will have noise canceling headphones, sound tubes, and a noise machine. The vestibular/motor/tactile area will have a trampoline, a sofa hammock, sensory mat, sensory wall, and a therapy swing. There will also be an area for a sand/water table and other sensory bins. The sensory room will allow any student in the school, not just my class, to explore what sensory input they benefit from the most and that will help regulate their mood (sad, anxious, scared, frustrated), so that they can focus better in the classroom. The sensory room will be used on an as needed basis for general education/resource students who are struggling in the classroom, whether it be due to frustration, anxiety, or something else completely. The self contained classroom will benefit most from scheduled sensory breaks for all students each day. But whatever the need is, the sensory room will be a tool that all students can use to help them improve behaviors, focus, and learning in school.
