  • Full Steam Ahead with STEM!

    Funded Oct 19, 2017

We are truly grateful for the donations given and subsequently matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. During the this difficult time in our state, where funding is questionable, it's more than comforting to know that we can depend on your continued support.

The students are currently using the STEM materials in two ways. When content comes up in science and we have materials to support what we are learning, they are used. The materials are fun and very high-interest, so we often use them on Fun Friday afternoons as a way to free explore and create.

The students were more than excited to see the boxes come in and of course, what was in each one! They are really enjoying using the materials and are as grateful as I am!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Crombar

  • Maximizing Student Success with Flexible Seating!

    Funded Jun 25, 2017

Flexible seating is going great! As the boxes came in, it felt like Christmas, and the students couldn't wait for me to open them! The students have been assigned a particular type of seating each day, and they've been taking turns via a chart. This allows them to try each type and to learn which type they like most. After everyone has tried them, they will be utilized on a first come-first served basis. Rules for flexible seating, including consequences for misuse, are posted. Students are learning how to handle each type, including which type can be moved around the room, which type they have to be more gentle with, and which type you're allowed to move while sitting on. So far, they are enjoying it! Thank you for being such a vital part of this project! As the year goes on, I wish for it to be an option for any and all of my students who wish to get up and move around or to just change the scenery. Not all seating arrangements work for all kids, and this helps to eliminate possible distractions also. Flexible seating works for us!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Crombar

Our school typically runs 15-28 students per classroom. Each year proves to be a year with diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs. I teach self-contained third grade. We are a rural community next to Southern Illinois University. The failure of Illinois to pass a state budget is directly impacting our classroom capabilities, as well as affecting enrollment and the well-being of our students' families. Any help on this project would be more than appreciated and aid in the meeting of the diverse needs in the classroom, something we aren't always able to do with limited resources.
