My students are from a community that is a minority majority. Many of them live in homes where English is the second language. Our school is a Title I school. These students do not have many books of their own, however, they have a desire to read, explore and learn. These students do not allow their personal situations to slow them down. Our classroom is a safe haven where they are encouraged to pursue their own voice as well as take risks. Many of these students come to me not reading on grade level. With my encouragement and the opportunity to pursue authentic reading most leave reading on grade level and develop a love for reading that lasts a lifetime.
