I am entering my first year teaching 5th grade in Sacramento, California. The students that will be in my class this year are often underrepresented in classroom libraries. I want to provide my students with an enriched library, representing as many unique aspects of my students’ individual cultures and experiences as possible. Diverse books act as both mirrors, reflecting one's own experiences and identity, as well as windows for students to observe and learn from experiences unlike their own. The books that I have chosen on this list will allow for high quality conversation within and beyond the classroom. They represent the complex identities and experiences of many of the students in my class, which will allow for heightened conversation in the classroom and opportunities for students to learn empathy and appreciation for the experiences of others.
