My students really love reading, both in English and Spanish! As an educator, I know that when a child has the book in their hand, they really focus and interact with the story during the lessons. Nothing tops the sensation of turning a page in a book. This year we are scheduled to read the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. The main character, Auggie, was born with a facial deformity. He's starting 5th grade and he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid. As a bilingual teacher to Immigrant and English Language Learners, I am so eager to attain a class set of the novel. My students will be able to make connections with the novel seeing that they too are beginning 5th grade. I think it will help all my students because in some way, small or big, we all know what it's like to be a 10yr old and wanting to feel accepted. With a class set of Wonder, my students will be able to interact with the text with and practice key reading strategies. This book will also teach my students about the importance of community with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.
