Current research suggests that student choice elevates student engagement and increases learning. Alternate seating options are one way to offer student choice while creating an environment conducive to optimal learning. My aspiration is to make our classroom a place where everyone feels comfortable and can be successful in their learning environment. With this in mind, I redesigned the classroom to offer alternative seating so students can sit, stand, wiggle and make choices to help them focus their attention in the best way possible. I will adjust desk height to create standing desks and find some tables that could be lowered to accommodate those that feel more comfortable on the floor. However, what I'm lacking are floor areas with comfy seats and wobble cushions that let students get their wiggles out while they focus on learning. My goal is to design a learning environment that supports alternative seating, allows student choice, and encourages students to focus on learning.
