My students have struggles and challenges that most adults will never experience. The area in which I teach has a 95% poverty rate. We are a Title-1 funded school. All of the students receive free and reduced price lunch. Many of the our parents struggle with addictions. Many of these parents are absent from the home leaving relatives to care for them. We have a very high transient population. This has impacted students' ability to stay on target in school. Most are not educated enough to help their primary age children with their homework.
Despite these obstacles my students arrive to school with smiles on their faces and kindred spirits. They want to learn but struggle with processing basic concepts. These are not your sit-down, paper-and-pencil learners. They thrive when they are given the opportunity to have fun while learning. So, I have tried my best to incorporate music, dance, rhythmic chants and visual aids to appeal to their learning style. Their eagerness to learn is addictive!
