Let’s face it. When students come to my school counseling office, they are usually not having their best day ever. Frustration, worry and grief frequently burden my students. Sometimes, in order to unpack and work through these big issues, a little lighthearted help is needed. I am requesting a curated set of animal and monster puppets to expand social-emotional learning opportunities. Puppets open up counseling sessions and whole-class guidance lessons to a wide variety of role-play and emotional expression opportunities. Students who are nervous to speak can deflect attention from them onto the puppet, which eases communication with the counselor. These puppets can represent concepts such as how our brain works better when our physical and emotional needs are met. They serve as cuddly support animal stand-ins for a student in crisis. They make emotional regulation and behavior practice easier as the teacher models and the student demonstrates a skill through the puppet. Most of all, they are engaging, and invite otherwise disengaged students to interact and have fun. Each puppet in this collection serves multiple purposes, providing the maximum benefit for money spent. I appreciate you considering a donation to this project.
