Students from all art levels engage in creating functional ceramic artworks. Level one students learn about the basics of how to finish and refine functional artworks. Ceramics and Sculpture Studio students learn how to create artwork on the throwing wheel and AP Pathways: 3D Students learn how to create sets and design their own original 3D functional ceramic artworks.
Asking students to create functional artworks engages them in a way, unlike non-functional artwork. Students learn to take extra care and refinement in their work as well as display a level of excitement as they anticipate themselves and others using their work.
The purchase of glazes and underglazes allow for students to make a thoughtful and informed decision about their functional artworks. It is required to finish ceramic work with a glaze in order for the piece to be food-safe and ready to use. These glazes will open opportunities for glazing and finishing functional ceramic artworks that will impact students at Central High School in all levels of art courses.
