I am a first year teacher in Title-I inner-city school teaching low income students. I have a bouncy group of kids who are eager to learn! Eleven out of my twenty-three students come from home environments where English is not spoken. These students rarely, if ever, experience the benefit of being read to at home, which makes their journey of learning to read more difficult than ever. When they go home after school, homework is not reinforced, their everyday experiences are not in English, and they lack the resources to extend their learning after school. Sixteen out of twenty-three of my students are on free-reduced lunch. Our school only provides basic classroom materials. The resources I am requesting cannot be provided by the school.
