Each year I spend a week reading a Dr. Seuss book to all the students. K-2 will hear one book and 3-5 another. K-2 will have a chance to color and play a game. 3-5 will complete a biography pamphlet about Dr. Seuss. Last year, the 3-5 graders heard The Butter Battle Book and created campaign posters. Listening to a story read out loud helps promote vocabulary, fluency, main idea, sequencing and many other reading skills that the students can learn to apply to their own reading. On Dr. Seuss's birthday, Read Across America Day, I invite members of the community and administration office to read Dr. Seuss books to my K-2 students in their classroom.
