My students are predominantly Hispanic and most live in or below the poverty line. A majority of my students enjoy sports and athletics. I incorporate opportunities to all my students to engage in a variety of sports. The two most popular sports are basketball and soccer. Because of the high interest in both, we have formed teams for each sport. I enjoy coaching basketball because it gives me an opportunity to establish a mentoring role with my students and gives them an alternative outlet, rather than going home or being in the streets. I believe that occupying a child's time with something positive, will decrease the chances of them affiliating themselves with the wrong crowd and getting into trouble.
