My students are low-income, public high schoolers largely on free and reduced-priced lunch. They are constantly surrounded by the wrong kinds of influences (gangs, drugs, and the like). Many of them are also Hispanic in a predominantly black school. With only 42% of our students graduating in 4 years, statistically it is likely the majority of these young men will not make it. However, when students are given the opportunity to get involved with extra-curricular activities, it is proved they are much more likely to matriculate. This soccer program is the first activity that most of these students have been interested in and could provide the motivation and support to carry them through. Sports not only improve physical health and ability, but more importantly they build character and community. In a community that so desperately needs more strong groups of young men, this team could become the mechanism that creates the exemplary young adults we are looking for.
