Most of my students rely solely on my school library for their reading needs -- both for recreation and for homework. Studies show that when students are provided high-interest books they are more engaged and likely to finish the book, and more apt to pick up another one. Our library has a need for twenty-one new books that fall between beginning readers (like Pete the Cat) and regular chapter books (like Ramona Quimby). Scholastic has a line of early chapter books that bridge that gap. Called "Branches" books, they help readers grow. These books have silly characters, with action and adventure, or are set in spooky settings -- all titles that will keep the kids coming back. Emergent readers want books with vibrant illustrations and not too many words on the pages. ESL and dyslexic readers also benefit from this format of book, so I want to get a variety of different series that will appeal to a wide range of students. Our library currently has a few books from three different Branches series and they are always checked out. I see first graders checking them out before they graduate to Junie B, and I see fifth graders checking them out just because they're funny. I know they are successful and would like to increase the number of Branches series and books in my library.
