Sometimes it's not that students don't want to read, it's that students don't know how to set aside the time for reading or don't know what to read. And, when it comes to graphic novels, students may have never encountered that format before. By providing students with graphic novels, you are allowing them to practice an entirely new skill set. Graphic novels are not "easier" because there are pictures; in fact, the pictures and the layout of the text add an extra layer of complexity. The best part is that students don't necessarily realize that they are encouraging their brains to think about text differently and in a more complex manner - they are simply enjoying a story.
