Many of my students have expressed frustration with the typical fare offered to them in literature class. For many of these students, school is the only time that they will read a book. Therefore, in an attempt to nurture a love for reading, I would like to introduce more contemporary novels to my classroom. Speak is an excellent start because of the engaging voice, use of symbolism, and imagery. It will also help students to understand that classic novels still resonate with very current themes as we will be comparing Speak to The Scarlet Letter. I am eager to teach this novel- we just need the books! Your support is deeply appreciated.
