Our students will benefit from clear masks. Visual communication, especially among young children, those who are deaf or hard of hearing, neurodiverse individuals, and students in special education is extremely important. Today, mask wearing has become the new norm in the classroom. Schools and teachers want to keep students safe from the persisting pandemic however, masks are negatively impacting our children's academic learning; specifically paper and cloth masks interfere with our students' ability to learn their sounds (phonological/phonemic awareness skills) and developmentally appropriate speech skills. These are skills necessary for speaking, reading and writing. Traditional face masks can limit communication and learning, blocking the ability to see facial expressions. Clear masks and clear communication are critical needs for teachers to teach and students to learn.
