My students are very bright and articulate individuals, who have been shamefully under-educated. Living in an inner-city district in California, they are resilient, creative, and generally unmotivated by the educational promise of a system that is failing them. They appreciate lively discussion and analysis and creation of visuals, but convincing them of the importance of reading and writing to understand history is a persistent challenge. Our school of about 400 students serves a racially and ethnically diverse cohort of students, who are almost uniformly lower working class or poor. In an area where the majority of students do not graduate from high school after 4 years, engaging students in learning is an ongoing struggle. Many of our students see how marginalized their communities are, and do not see education as a way to improve their lives. They can succeed, but they need a great deal of encouragement, timely support and feedback and individualized instruction.
