Gardening is a healthy, fun, hands-on learning experience that develops new skills and expands children’s knowledge about the science of growing and sustainability. As more students are returning to on-campus classes yet COVID-19 social distancing and other safety protocols remain necessary, my school greatly needs outdoor spaces to promote learning. Authentic outdoor learning in natural spaces will bring a unique educational experience as we continue in the post-pandemic era. All from literacy integration, digging, planting, watering, growing, and harvesting children learn about the life cycle of plants. They also learn about conservation, creativity, nutrition, health, and sustainability. My young students deserve a safe space designed for young children to experience the joys of learning in nature.
