In light of recent history, I want to do more to teach my students to celebrate racial diversity and each person's individual uniqueness. It is my goal for next year to acquire more books that spark healthy conversations about race and to include them on my shelves so every one of my students feel they are represented and have characters that are like them to look up to. I also want to use these books for classroom read-alouds so we can have productive conversations together about how to be empathetic, compassionate, and inclusive to those around you, no matter what their background is. I believe a book is a powerful and beautiful way to showcase and celebrate diverse stories of human experience in a way that impacts your outlook on others for your entire life. If you are looking for a small way to make a big difference, this could be it!!
