My students range from Kindergarten-6th Grade. We are in a high poverty area and have many cultures represented. Quite a few of my students have difficulties speaking English, especially in Kindergarten and 1st Grade. The kids really enjoy music class and the ability to express themselves in different ways than in their normal classroom setting. One of the ways we do this is by playing on drums. They are able to learn how to keep the beat steady, play rhythms, improvise and eventually make up their own rhythms to play. A lot of my students get a great feeling of achievement when they are able to play along with the class and especially when they get to play a solo for their classmates.
