Inside my students desks are outdated textbooks that are last dated back from 2004. My students have been asking about reading a book altogether as a class. Unfortunately, as a new teacher, I do not have a class set of books. Having a class set of books will enable each of my student to carry their own copy. By having their own copy of the book, my English learners and struggling readers will be able to read at their own pace, make annotations with the use of post-it notes, and learn through print-rich texts. When we're done with the novels, I will be able to use these class set of books repeatedly with additional students for years to come. Reading Esperanza Rising will quickly become engaging for my students, because many of my students come from immigrant families. Reading Holes will teach my students about many different elements in a story. In addition, Time for Kids will grant my students access to read current events with highly engaging photos that can benefit both my visual learners and English learners. My students will not only build literacy skills with these texts but will also learn to engage in collaborative conversations with one another. Each novel and news event will culminate with students collaborating to develop their own opinions tied with their character's point-of-view, allowing the opportunity to build their academic language skills. I am confident that gaining these new resources will greatly open a broad range of teaching material for me to best support my students literacy and language needs.
