The sports book collections books are most frequently read by boys. Multiple studies show that boys often tend to gravitate toward nonfiction books, and this has been reflected in our own library. We need soccer books to provide our male reluctant readers with materials that pique their interests, and encourage them to read further. Many of our male students have an interest in soccer, but of the few books we have available, several are at least 20 years old. Soccer books are often requested, including students whose first language is not English. Reading books in which students understand the context of the game and the players High interest reading selections are key variables in empowering literacy proficiency for our reluctant readers and students of limited English proficiency. Updating our collection for these particular learners is key in building capacity for their achievement. Boys who might not pick up any other kinds of books in the library will often check out sports books.
