All of my students have experienced at least 5 or more 'Adverse Childhood Experiences' also called 'ACEs'. ACEs are traumatic events occurring before the age of 18 and include varying types of abuse and neglect, as well as parental mental illness, substance use, divorce, incarceration, and domestic violence. Such ACEs have lasting emotional and health consequences for children that can last into adulthood and can be carried into the workplace and into their personal lives. A landmark study in the 1990s found a significant relationship between the number of ACEs a person experienced and a variety of negative outcomes in adulthood, including poor physical and mental health, substance abuse, and risky behaviors. Further, the more ACEs experienced, the greater the risk for these outcomes.
