Together with two wonderful teacher assistants, I work with a group of very young children who have intellectual or physical disabilities. I currently have four students in my room. A couple of them communicate through babbles or pointing at objects. A few can point to pictures of the things they want. One is completely silent. One thing that they have in common is that they have been through more in their short lives than most of us will ever face. Many have endured long hospitalizations, multiple therapies, and countless doctor's appointments. Some of my students have very serious health issues. Despite these challenges, my students come to school excited to learn. I often wonder what may be trapped inside their minds that they just can't articulate. What would they say if they had a voice?
