One area where I often see my students need additional experiences during preschool is in their fine motor skills. Many children come to us with very little hand strength, which means they need to strengthen those muscles to hold and use a writing utensil or pair of scissors correctly. Materials like tweezers, tongs, putty, a magnetic alphabet maze and a manipulative toy library with gears will allow me to help my students develop the strength they need to be successful when they are learning to write in a fun, developmentally appropriate way. Adaptive scissors will give the children an opportunity to build muscle control without having to strain while cutting. Writing and cutting are both necessary during kindergarten, so my students will be better prepared when their hands are strong enough to handle these tasks easily. It is very important to me to provide my students with a positive learning experience early in their school career that they can build on for the rest of their lives.
