Math should not be boring! By using hands-on and physical items to learn math, students are more engaged in their own learning. Even as adults, we like to be able to actually see and do what we are learning. Students gain a deeper understanding of a topic when they can manipulate things in front of them and see the math happen before their eyes. One of the hardest concepts for students is squared functions. The algebra base ten blocks will provide an actual example of what x squared looks like. These can be used from the middle school level with basic equations up to our Pre-calculus classes. All types of dice will be used to conduct actual probability experiments. Students are then able to see the difference between theoretical probability and actual real life odds! The whiteboards are the biggest help for math students. There is something about being able to practice math problems on a non permanent surface that is low stress Students should enjoy their learning experience. Providing them with new and unique ways to learn means less boredom in the classroom. When students see the whiteboards or other objects on the table, they get excited that they came to math today.
