Our school is located in a semi-rural area; our students span the economic range from wealth to poverty. Over 45% of our total population is on free or reduced lunch. We work with students during the most awkward of the age ranges --adolescence! Our school serves approximately 600 seventh and eighth graders. While 12 to 14 year olds bring interesting perspectives to the classroom, they also bring creativity and excitement to learning! Students in the Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) Program are some of the best and brightest. AIG students must demonstrate high performance in academic classes and have an aptitude in the 90% percentile or higher. These students often exhibit high self-motivation and eagerness to excel. Others struggle with underachievement. Regardless, most AIG students crave complexity and rigor in their academic tasks. I plan opportunities for students that allow them to work collaboratively on authentic tasks in order to stimulate intellectual curiosity.
