The majority of my students are learning English as a second language and live in a high poverty, urban neighborhood. They tend to be social and work best in groups where they can share work and speak to each other. The language barrier can make checking for understanding difficult at times. This age group also has short attention spans, so meaning can be lost or becomes harder to retrieve if they have to transition. However, the children are often able to demonstrate their understanding of an event or concept through their pictures and writing. Regardless of the language spoken or vocabulary used the children understand each others writing/drawing. It is almost as universal as play itself.
