I teach science to low-level special education in all grade levels, honors science to 9th graders and engineering to upper grades. The low level special education have been treated like they can't learn for so long that I have to fight with them to make them believe that they can. Once I break through that barrier, they shock themselves with the difficulty of work they can handle. The honors students need big challenges. They come into high school without having been taught by a scientist before, some of them intimidated by their poor middle school teachers. I attack with real-world examples of the problems are they are doing. I try to keep the engineering class on projects. I teach the basics and then find projects. and to fund these projects, I turn to DonorsChoose and its generouos donors.
