The 7th grade students in my school are hard workers and enthusiastic to learn but come from an inner-city school district in upstate NY that has a high poverty rate where 64.6% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school lacks resources for literacy due to lack of a tax basis from businesses. Furthermore, we have a large population of Arabic, Spanish speaking and Guyanese students whose English may be limited. Concurrently, many of our students do not have access to quality texts at home. As a result, while many students love to learn, reading is a struggle both inside and outside of school. This struggle can affect their achievement in all classes, and without intervention, will affect their future successes. Without accessible texts, students may slowly withdraw from learning as the reading intensity increases.
