More than 90% of the students in my school are economically disadvantaged. Our students are extremely eager to learn but still lack the basic literacy skills needed to successfully meet the standards of the state mandated STAAR test. While 70% of students met the standard for Reading and Science, they are not yet performing at the level of mastery needed for success. More than half of the students in fifth grade this year are English Language Learners (ELL) who need ample opportunities to increase their science vocabulary and literacy skills by reading authentic, high-interest texts. The more engaging the text, the more likely it is that the information and vocabulary gleaned from it will be retained.
