My students will use the pop bead materials, as well as some clues in order to work through the discovery of DNA, just as the scientists in the past have done! In combination with the clues, students will begin to create structures using the pop beads. As they get more and more clues, the structure will begin to look more and more like the classic DNA double helix that is so commonly recognized today. This activity allows the students to see why the structure is the way that it is. All of my students could benefit from the ability to work through the discovery of the structure of DNA in a hands on way! Often times, the learning that students experience relies heavily on memorization and text analysis--this provides a different more interactive way of reaching the same learning.
