Our school feeds from schools that are chronically underperforming. My students enter high school approximately 3.5 years behind in math and science. They've never been pushed to achieve what we know they can master. As a result, their life trajectories aren't on the same path as their higher-income peers, even those in the same district. In our high school, 87% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and 99% of our student body is classified as belonging to a minority group. Science has never been made real for these students, and their general disinterest in that subject really shows it. However, I have seen even the toughest kids' eyes light up when they see something completely unfamiliar to them in science class. All of my students can have that spark, the challenge is just finding out how to ignite it. This project will help my students start down that "I wonder..." path that leads to genuine, meaningful learning experiences!
